Our Staff

Paul Hyland - Owner, Stylist, Colorist

It is pretty common in the salon industry for owners to step away from their chairs and concentrate on management duties. For me, this would mean giving up what I really like about my profession - the creative challenges of artistic hair design and the personal rewards of every day client interaction. I have always enjoyed the challenge of creating "new looks" and to keep current, I have maintained a personal goal to constantly update, learn, listen, and interact with the other professionals who work for me. Whether I am doing a cut or color, creating a hairstyle involves a careful and thoughtful interpretation of a style that the client has in mind and translating their vision into a finished look. While we carry several color lines in the salon, my go-to favorite is Redken Colour Fusion. As a long-time career professional, I have seen many trends come and go but really enjoy the transformation that occurs with a full head of natural looking color. My other areas of expertise include highlights/lowlights, razor cutting, men's haircut/style, and clipper cutting.

Now enough about me and more about my staff! I feel that I have assembled the best stylists and technicians in the area. This notion is reinforced by the fact that my salon and spa has been consistently recognized among "the best" in the area by McHenry County residents in the annual, NW Herald-Best of the Fox, Reader's Choice awards.

If you have additional questions about a stylist or technician, please give us a call!

Lindsey - Stylist, Colorist (Redken Color Specialist), Special Occasion Hair, Manicurist, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

I started working for Paul over 15 years ago as a stylist assistant while still in high school. After receiving my cosmetology degree from Pivot Point, I continued my education at the Redken Exchange in New York City achieving certification as a Redken Color Specialist (including corrective color) and creative cutting/styling. Recently, I received advanced training in the Pureology product line that offers color protective shampoos, conditioners, and styling aids. Color services (especially beautiful red colors) and special occasion hair designs for weddings, anniversaries, or prom are among my specialties (and favorite services!)

I also enjoy providing eye brow shaping, and manicure/ pedicure services for my clients including 2-week, Shellac hybrid manicures and I have achieved CND Shellac certification. As an experienced stylist, I approach each client with a professional attitude, confidence, and willingness to listen.

Carol - Stylist, Colorist (Goldwell Specialist), Special Occasion Hair, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing, Facial Threading

I would describe myself as energetic and creative! I really enjoy all aspects of my job including the gift of providing hair services to the entire family, and I enjoy working on the young and young at heart. My color expertise includes Goldwell color (I am a Goldwell Color Specialist), highlighting, and bleach blonde color. I offer traditional scissor cuts as well as razor cuts, hair styling instruction, special occasion hair and updos. Do you have thin hair? I can suggest products and strategies (based on my own personal experience) that will make a difference! Continuing education is a personal focus for me and I am involved as a salon education coordinator. When I don’t have my hands in someone’s hair, I am using my hands for other creative endeavors including gardening, painting, or remodeling.

Available: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.

Mary B - Stylist, Colorist, Special Occasion Hair, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

My talents in hair design are the result of both nature and nurture. I had the benefit of growing up around talented family members and mentors who were hairstylists but I also knew at a young age that I would pursue a profession in the beauty industry, recognizing a natural talent to create beautiful hair styles.

My goal is to help clients look vibrant and current. This is achieved through my personal dedication to remain updated on today’s current looks, color, cutting, and styling trends. Continuing education and my own teenage children keep me on my toes with today’s best looks! One of my favorite services is to create special occasion hairstyles for the bride, bridal parties, or prom. Special occasion hair allows me to fully showcase my vision and design talents. I also enjoy “transforming” color services and adapting hairstyles for my clients and their families as they move through different stages of their lives. It has been wonderful seeing clients every 4- 6 weeks through the years and helping them with their haircare needs.

My other strength is customer service. I want my clients to feel pampered, special, and leave the salon feeling as though they experienced great service at a great value. In pursuit of expanding my customer service emphasis, I also offer my clients nail, facial waxing, and body waxing services.

I look forward to meeting you!

Jackie - Stylist, Colorist, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

As the mother of 3 active boys, I know how important it is to take a break from a busy schedule and do something special for yourself that will provide a lasting benefit! One of the things that I enjoy most about my job is the ability to make my clients look and feel their best.

As an experienced stylist, I am knowledgeable in all aspects of hair care including cut, color, highlighting/lowlighting, and perms. A successful style also includes an assessment of the client’s facial shape, life style, and personality. One of my favorite services is a highlight/lowlight technique using cellophane (versus foil) to separate the hair strands. Cellophane allows me to apply the color close to the scalp and limits color bleeding for a beautiful, longer lasting result.

As I approach my 23rd year working for Paul, I still thoroughly love being in a salon atmosphere and seeing my friends and clients and I always look forward to seeing new clients in my chair. I hope to meet you soon!

Beth - Stylist, Colorist, Finished Blow-dry/Styles for Long Hair, Manicurist, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

I worked for Paul as a stylist assistant in high school and quickly realized that I would pursue a cosmetology career, completing my degree at CSI with an emphasis in Vidal Sassoon cutting techniques. I thoroughly enjoy the versatility of providing a more “full service” experience for my clients including hair, nail, and facial waxing services. While I love all aspects of my job, I particularly enjoy highlighting and creating the perfect “blonde” shade. My color line of choice is Redken. I also enjoy creating the beautiful, loose curl styles that are so popular today (thank you Princess Kate!) as well as “down-style” special occasion hair for bridal parties. My favorite professional product line is Pureology and I recently achieved Pureology Certification through advanced training.

Jeannette - Stylist, Colorist, Special Occasion Hair, Manicurist, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

I am a graduate of Arlington Academy of Cosmetology. I embrace the philosophy of this salon that believes one designer should help you achieve your complete look from cut to color to finish. I also enjoy the opportunity to provide facial waxing and nail services to my clients including manicures, pedicures, and 2-week, CND Shellac (no chip) manicures. I have recently received CND Shellac certification. I like to describe myself as a “freestyle” hair artist. I love change and you will probably notice that I will have a different cut or color every time that you see me! While I might suggest something new to clients during their visit, listening to my clients is key. My strengths are color, cuts, up-styles and special occasion hair.

On a personal note, I am the mother of a 5 year old son, so family time is a joy as well as a fondness for cooking, baking, and traveling.

Linda U - Skin Therapist, Makeup Artist, Manicurist, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

I received my cosmetology license from Ippolito Beauty Academy and followed a passion for helping clients achieve their goals for beautiful skin (men and women), makeup, and nails.

As a Certified Skin Care "Specialist" for Dermalogica, I am trained to address the challenges that my clients face with specific skin types and skin issues including acneic, sensitive, and aging skin care strategies. Through Dermalogica's education center (IDI-International Dermal Institute), I have pursued advanced training in Dermalogica's targeted, specialized skincare lines so that I can prescribe skincare solutions through consultation and facemapping (which is always complimentary). I have also studied specialized facial techniques including lymphatic drainage, pressure point techniques, to stimulate circulation and help move toxins out of the body.

Beyond beautiful skin, I thoroughly enjoy the “finishing touch” of expert makeup application. With 11 years of freelance make-up artistry experience, I specialize in makeovers, airbrush makeup, and special occasion makeup for weddings or prom.

My other area of expertise is nail care including spa manicures, spa pedicures and 2-week, Shellac Hybrid Polish manicures using soak off, gel-hybrid products from CND (Shellac). I am a CND Shellac certified professional.

My hobbies include singing, scrabbling and spending time with my family.

Available: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
(Wedding makeup offered in-salon or on-site.)

Colleen - Stylist, Colorist, Men’s Cuts, Styles & Color, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

As an instructor and graduate of Haskana Institute of Hair Design, I know the value of continuing education to provide my clients with the most up-to-date looks using the most current techniques. I take my craft seriously (with a tool belt maturity) and I am not afraid to think outside of the box! My expertise includes women’s cut and color, color correction, men’s style/cut/color, and the finishing touch…facial waxing. As a true-blue “people person”, I enjoy seeing people in the salon as well as interacting with my community outside of work through volunteering, outdoor activities, and working with various animal rescue groups. While you might see me kayaking at 3 Oaks Recreation Center, my artistic flare drives my interest in art, music, fashion (and giving my clients a great hairstyle, of course!)

I look forward to seeing you in my chair!

Sondra - Hairstylist, Colorist, (Goldwell Color Specialist), Keratin Straightening Treatment, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

Recognized as "One of the Best" Hairstylists in the 2015 NW Herald, Best of the Fox Reader's Choice Awards.

I love what I do, period! The best part of my job is that I can help people look and feel better about their appearance, which is a wonderful feeling. I received most of my training with Sebastian and had the valuable experience of working in a Sebastian Artistic Training Center for over 3 years, before moving to a salon setting. My favorite services include cutting, razor cutting and multi-dimensional color. I specialize and have received advanced training in the Goldwell color line. Most recently, I received training and specialize in Marcia Teixeira Keratin Straightening. This service can be truly life-changing for clients who have struggled with frizzy, curly, unmanageable hair by offering clients smoother, straighter hair that lasts for 4-6 months. In addition to client services, I share the responsibility of coordinating salon education classes for the entire staff. Outside of the salon, you will find me spending time with my husband and children, doing Pilates, or enjoying the day on a local golf course!

Available: Monday 1-7, Tuesday 10-5, Wednesday 3-9, Thursday 10-5.
Available at other times for Keratin Treatments and other services, upon request.

Dana K - Stylist, Colorist, Special Occasion Hair, Hair Extensions, Keratin Straightening Treatment, Perms, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

My Aunt and Uncle owned a salon and exposed me at a very early age to the creative, vibrant salon industry. While completing my senior year in high school, I was also enrolled in CSI Cosmetology School and working part time as a stylist assistant, attaining my cosmetology license by the time I was 19. I feel fortunate knowing that I picked the right career – a career that combines my outgoing, social personality with my enthusiasm for creating beautiful hair designs. I thoroughly enjoy and embrace continuing education classes and I take advantage of online resources such as Pinterest and Instagram to keep current with style and color trends.

Both new and existing clients can expect my attention and dedication to achieving a hair style that is suitable for the client’s daily lifestyle. I feel it is important to counsel my clients about realistic styling and maintenance issues and guide the client into a look that is both flattering and realistically maintained at home. Ultimately, I want my clients to leave my chair feeling comfortable, special, and pampered.

I enjoy all aspects of color from subtle highlights to fun, fashion colors however, I particularly enjoy Balayage and Ombre color techniques. I also love customizing long hair with layered cuts followed with finishing techniques to achieve interesting texture and movement. I get a lot of requests for natural, “un-done” looks!
My other full-time job is being a wife and mom! I have 2 boys and love spending time with my family and our dogs.

My current hours are Wednesday 9:00 AM-6:45 PM, Friday 9:00 AM-2:45 PM & Saturday 8:00 AM-2:45 PM

Jennifer - Licensed Massage Therapist, Member ABMP, NCMBMT

I have a passion for massage therapy because I know, through experience that an effective, targeted massage session can improve a client’s physical and mental well-being. My clients can expect a session that is deeply relaxing but I also embrace interactive communication to work on areas that require a more targeted approach using deep tissue, trigger point, and myofascial techniques. In short, I like to “fix people” and I believe that massage therapy offers therapeutic benefit for pain issues, migraine issues, sport injuries, and improved flexibility. My client experience ranges from leg work in runners, migraine release techniques, and shoulder/upper-back/neck issues that are so common with today’s use of electronic devices!

I am well versed in Swedish (relaxation), Hot Stone, Deep Tissue/Trigger Point, Sport, Myofascial, and Prenatal massage. If you participate in sports, I will tailor a session to address specific muscles to optimize function and increase recovery time of muscles.

Available: Tuesday & Thursday mornings, Wednesday afternoon & evening, Friday & Saturday 9:00 AM-3:00 PM

Tammie - Manicurist, Acrylic Nail Design

The finishing touch is at your fingertips. I have been a nail technician with Paul Hyland Salon and Day Spa for more than 13 years and I have several clients that I have been “holding hands with”, every two weeks for more than twenty years! I enjoy the salon atmosphere and experience and I am committed to offering my clients the best the nail industry has to offer. This is accomplished with education, attendance at major industry trade shows, and personally evaluating new products and techniques. I attend nail industry continuing education classes several times a year and hold advanced CND certification for Shellac (hybrid polishes) and recently achieved CND Master Painter Certification, specializing in CND's additives for clients who want extra dimension, sparkle, or artistry with their nail design.

I am ready to make your hands and feet look their best whether you choose acrylics, hybrid polishes, nail art, or a beautiful, natural buff. My clientele span all ages and include both men and women.

My interests outside the salon include gardening, travel, fishing, and most important, I love being with my family.

I am available Thursday through Saturday, and my schedule is flexible to accommodate early or later evening appointments. I offer standing appointments, as well.

Wendy - Stylist, Colorist, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

I am a Crystal Lake native and local graduate of CSI, (studying Pivot Point) and have been a cosmetologist in McHenry County for over 10 years. As a professional in the beauty industry, I feel very strongly that it is important to approach every client at my best, both in terms of my attitude and appearance. Whether I am doing a color service, cutting service, or the final finish of a hair style, it has always been important for me to follow through with the client from start to finish. This allows for better communication between the stylist and client to achieve the desired outcome.

As a motorcycle enthusiast, I admit to having an “adventure-seeking” personality and enjoy the challenge of making dramatic changes for clients. However, I am comfortable and experienced with all aspects of color and cutting including short styles, long styles, layering, texturizing and men’s cuts. My goal is to exceed the client’s expectations.

In my spare time, I love reading, riding my motorcycle, and taking long walks on the beach…preferably in Aruba!

Karley K – Stylist, Colorist, Special Occasion Hair, Makeup Design, Facial Waxing

Pursuing a cosmetology degree was a choice influenced by a family history in salon ownership but I also knew from an early age that a career in hair and makeup design provided me with the perfect opportunity to be creative, stay current with today’s fashion trends, and help clients look their best.

My approach is to make my clients feel completely relaxed, pampered, and special. I feel that a salon experience should provide salon guests with a bit of an escape and this is “their time” to feel relaxed and calm. When a client is in my chair, my eyes are on them and them only.

My clients frequently ask me for advice or are interested in trying something different. I counsel them on what they can expect with a change in hairstyle, hair color, or both. I also like to factor in seasonal changes and current fashion/hair trends to help my guests stay current. I am confident with providing a style that the client can feel good about and educating the client about the final product and how to achieve the look that they want. Although I love all aspects of hair design for guests of any age (both male and female), one of my favorite services is Balayage, or the creative, free-form blending of color! I have also worked extensively in the wedding industry creating special occasion hairstyles and makeup design for the bride and bridal party.

Staying current in the beauty industry is beyond crucial! I embrace professional education, videos, etc., but I also “constantly” look at online and social media sources with pictures and techniques posted by other stylists and peers. The “working stylist’s” perspective available on social media is current, trending, and realistic which is an important tool that I use to provide excellent hair and makeup design for my clients.

My hours are: Wednesday 11:00 AM-7:00 PM, Friday 8:00 AM-4:00 PM, Saturday 9:00 AM-3:00 PM

Linda D - Stylist, Colorist, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

I am an experienced stylist who values continuing education to stay current with today’s styles and trends. I feel as the industry changes, so must the stylist. As a former salon owner, I have a strong understanding of issues that are important to clients and I enjoy the challenge of creating a style that is easy for the client to manage and enhances the client’s features. I have had advanced education in color and texture and I enjoy doing both. My repertoire of services includes cutting, color, perms, blow-dry/finishing, special occasion hair and facial waxing. Outside of work, I enjoy spending my free time with my family and doing various crafts.

 Available: Tuesday, Thursday, & Friday

Mary D - Stylist, Colorist, Permanent Wave, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

I graduated from Doree’s School of Beauty Culture in Illinois and have enjoyed a long career in the beauty industry. I have many long time clients that I enjoy and cherish seeing on a regular basis. The personal relationships that I have established with my clients and co-workers are very important to me. I love working on naturally curly hair, creating short hairstyles, perms, and hair style finishing. Attending classes, and larger hair shows always creates excitement and new ideas that I can share with my clients. While my hairstyling career has been rewarding, my other love, The Chicago Cubs, has been a little less than rewarding (but I love them anyway!) I also enjoy cooking and gardening.

Available: Tuesday 9-2, Wednesday 9-1, Thursday 1-7, Friday 9-1, Saturday 9-1.

Elise - Stylist, Colorist (Redken & Goldwell), Special Occasion Hair, Eyebrow Design/Facial Waxing

I absolutely love doing hair and my goal for each client is to find a style that represents the client’s unique personality, is most flattering for the client, and is manageable and easy for the client to achieve on their own. When a client sits in my chair, I will inquire what the client “loves” about their hair and what they don’t like. This helps me to understand their lifestyle and provide direction toward beautiful hairstyles that are most realistic. My journey toward a successful cosmetology career began in high school as a salon shampoo assistant and receptionist. I witnessed the balance of a professional, creative and fun atmosphere that is unique to the salon profession and decided to pursue a cosmetology license at The Salon Professional Academy. After graduating in 2008, I continued training with Lisa Bender, a well-known Redken Platform Artist and I have continued to pursue additional technique training as well as advanced color training with both Redken and Goldwell professional color lines. As an experienced stylist, I still feel excited and passionate about my career choice. I love that hair trends (for both men and women) are constantly changing, influenced by changes in fashion as well as the change in seasons. I particularly enjoy creating multi-dimensional color, (using the latest techniques to embrace the latest color trends) and creating dazzling, special occasion styles for the bride, bridal party, prom or other special events.

With my free time, I enjoy exercising (to balance my cooking passion), shopping, and most important, spending time with wonderful family and friends.
